The Russian military transport tanker aircraft Il-78MK-90A has become one of the key elements in discussions about cooperation between Moscow and Jakarta in the field of aviation technologies. The aircraft was created on the basis of the modernized Il-76MD-90A and received capabilities that allow it to simultaneously perform aerial refueling and transport large cargo. This was stated by Defence Security Asia.
According to the publication, interest in the aircraft is associated with Indonesia's growing attention to expanding the capabilities of its air force and strengthening its role in the Indo-Pacific region. The authors note that these platforms can significantly increase the range of aviation operations without the need for frequent landings for refueling.
The Il-78MK-90A is considered the export version of the new Russian aerial tanker. The aircraft is equipped with four PS-90A-76 engines, can reach speeds of up to 850 km/h, has a maximum takeoff weight of about 210 tons, and can transfer up to 78 tons of fuel in the air depending on the operating mode. In addition, the aircraft retains its transport capabilities and can carry up to 60 tons of cargo.
The main advantage of the aircraft is its new fuel transfer system and modernized avionics. Compared to previous versions of the Il-78, the performance of the refueling equipment has been improved, and the service life and operational capabilities of the aircraft have increased.
