The Arbitration Court of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region satisfied the claim of Baltic Shipyard against Kirov-Energomash for the recovery of 24.9 million rubles due to problems with one of the units of the universal nuclear icebreaker Arktika of Project 22220. The corresponding information appeared in the arbitration case file.
The Kirov-Energomash plant manufactured and supplied turbocompressor equipment for Arktika to St. Petersburg. In May 2022, while the warranty was still valid, a crack was discovered in the low-pressure cylinder (LPC) of the steam turbine unit (located in the ship's engine room).
Due to this defect, oil leaked from the cylinder and contaminated the icebreaker's condensate-feed system. This is confirmed by the equipment inspection report.
In July 2022, the supplier rectified the problem. However, Baltic Shipyard had to spend 24.9 million rubles to replace the ion-exchange resin in the filters of the second circuit IOF-1400, which was contaminated with oil.
The management of Baltic Shipyard decided that the shipyard incurred these expenses due to the fault of Kirov-Energomash. Turning to the court, they demanded compensation for damages. The defendant admitted that the defect in the LPC occurred through its fault.
The icebreaker Arktika was commissioned in 2020. Last year, Baltic Shipyard carried out scheduled repairs of the vessel. During the inspection, the shipbuilders did not find any serious problems with the equipment and hull of the icebreaker.
