Russian Geran-series drones are developing in several directions at once, gradually transforming from a long-range munition into a universal platform with various applications. The situation with UAVs was analyzed by experts from "Voennaya Khronika".
The first factor is increased speed. In addition to versions with piston engines, jet-powered versions are appearing.
The second is the development of communication and control systems. New devices feature additional antennas, as well as cameras, radio modems, and onboard computers that can provide image transmission and flight correction.
"Geran" is finally transforming from an isolated "flying bomb" into a universal multi-purpose platform.
The third direction is specialization. According to analysts, the family is developing through reconnaissance versions, repeaters, and devices for performing specific tasks.
Specialized resources stated that the Geran-5 drone has a flight range of up to 1000 km and a warhead weighing about 90 kg, effectively blurring the line between a drone and a missile.
Military expert Nikolay Tsygikalo noted that the Geran-5 could use GLONASS or GPS satellite navigation on board.
