Russia and Indonesia are ready to move to negotiations on creating a fleet of floating nuclear power plants. The project is considered one of the promising options for the country's energy development, and Moscow awaits the final decision of the Indonesian leadership to launch an official dialogue.
Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Sergey Tolchenov announced that the parties are preparing to begin negotiations on cooperation in the nuclear field. According to him, Jakarta has already identified floating nuclear power plants as a priority direction, but a final decision on moving to practical steps has not yet been made.
Floating nuclear power plants can be a solution for energy supply to remote regions of Indonesia, where the construction of large ground-based facilities is complicated by infrastructure and geographical features. This format allows for faster deployment of a power unit near the coast, connecting it to existing grids, and, if necessary, moving it between areas.
In Russian-Indonesian cooperation, nuclear energy is considered not only as a source of electricity but also as a direction for the development of other technologies. After receiving political approval, the parties will be able to discuss the parameters of future projects and possible supplies.
Floating nuclear power plants are already one of the directions of Russian nuclear technologies. Their key advantage is the ability to deploy capacities in places where the construction of traditional stations requires significant time and infrastructure investments.
