Rosatom to launch production of electric motors for CNC machines for the first time in Russia

The State Corporation will create domestic spindle and drive units for industrial equipment

Rosatom will begin production of electric motors for metalworking machines with numerical control (CNC) – such components have not been mass-produced in Russia before. The new motors will become part of the domestic machine control ecosystem "Atomika", which is being developed by the state corporation.

Production is planned to be launched in the second half of 2027 based on design documentation prepared by Rosatom's specialized enterprises.

The new electric motors will be used as part of a complete set of CNC equipment for Russian machine tool companies.

Within the framework of the project, two main types of drives will be created. Synchronous electric motors are designed to move the working bodies of the machine and control the movement of the cutting tool along the coordinate axes. Asynchronous motors will be responsible for rotating the spindle – a key component of lathes and milling machines.

According to Vadim Sukharev, General Director of Rosatom's machine tool integration division, the production of main spindle motors will be a new direction for Russian industry, as such products have not been produced domestically before.

The new solutions are designed for use in the most demanding industries – mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, nuclear industry, shipbuilding, oil and gas sector, and instrument making. The use of Russian components will reduce the dependence of machine tool manufacturing on foreign suppliers of key components.
