The Project 22220 nuclear icebreaker "Yakutia" successfully passed its annual survey and confirmed its readiness for operation in harsh Arctic conditions. The vessel was inspected in the Kara Sea by specialists from the Murmansk branch of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS).
During the survey, specialists assessed the technical condition of the icebreaker and its compliance with the requirements of the rules of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping and international maritime conventions. The inspection showed that the vessel maintains the necessary characteristics for operation in conditions of extremely low temperatures, constant ice exposure, and high loads.
"Yakutia" is designed for year-round navigation of vessels along the Northern Sea Route, as well as for ensuring navigation in Russian ports where ice conditions remain difficult for most of the year. The icebreaker is designed for operation in conditions of severe icing, vibrations, and increased load on the main systems.
The nuclear-powered vessel became the fourth Project 22220 vessel built at the Baltic Shipyard of the United Shipbuilding Corporation for the Rosatom State Corporation. The project was developed by the Iceberg Central Design Bureau. The icebreaker was laid down in May 2020, launched in November 2022, and handed over to the customer in March 2025.
