UVZ Designer Criticizes Tank "Mangals": They Hinder Speed and Visibility

The metal "frame" only helps to get from point A to point B

Homemade protective "mangals" on main Russian tanks solve a very narrow problem and directly affect the performance of combat vehicles. The shortcomings of these makeshift structures were explained by a UVZ designer who wished to remain anonymous.

According to him, tank crews are guided by their own safety concerns in an environment dominated by drones. However, factory protection should be comprehensive and not reduce the capabilities of armored vehicles.

Makeshift "super-mangals" solve a narrow problem – getting from point A to point B. At the same time, they can completely deprive the tank of its key tactical and technical characteristics: reduce mobility, block the firing sector, or decrease the field of view of observation devices.

The engineer added that the factory does not have the right to thoughtlessly attach systems that might help in one situation but lead to the destruction of the vehicle in another.

Military thought has moved forward – and "mangals" are gradually being abandoned. So-called "dandelions" are gaining popularity – drone protection in the form of unraveled steel cables.
