The heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser (TARKR) "Admiral Nakhimov" of Project 1144.2M is capable of carrying three ship-based helicopters. This non-obvious advantage of the cruiser was pointed out by military analysts from Military Watch Magazine (MWM).
The air wing of "Admiral Nakhimov" may include Ka-27, Ka-29, or Ka-31 helicopters. Parking spaces for the aircraft were equipped in a special hangar under the cruiser's deck.
While most modern destroyers and cruisers operate one helicopter, Kirov-class ships are the only ones designed to accommodate up to three heavy helicopters.
The capabilities of "Nakhimov" can even be compared to the Mistral helicopter carrier. But the French ship has six launch pads for takeoff, while Project 1144.2M has only one.
Nikolai Patrushev, Head of the Russian Maritime Board, noted that "Admiral Nakhimov" will soon return to service, but did not specify exact dates.
Western journalists have already called "Admiral Nakhimov" the most dangerous cruiser in the world due to its powerful armament.
