PD-35 engine thrust exceeded 35 tons: joining the league of Rolls-Royce and General Electric

The power plant is intended for a new wide-body aircraft

The PD-35 aircraft engine being developed in Russia will be able to have a thrust of over 35 tons. This was announced by the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Anton Alikhanov.

First and foremost, the key to any aircraft is the engine. It's called PD-35, but, I'll reveal a secret, the thrust is already above 35 tons even on the technology demonstrator.

As one might easily guess, the initial thrust limit of the PD-35 is indicated in its name. While there is no specific aircraft for the power plant yet, it is tentatively intended for a prospective wide-body airliner.

"Pervyy Tekhnicheskiy" compared the stated characteristics of the PD-35 with long-established heavy engines from Rolls-Royce and General Electric. The most powerful of them is the GE9X for the Boeing 777X with a thrust of up to 49.4 tons.

The head of OAK, Vadim Badeha, estimated the development time for the new wide-body aircraft to be within 10 years. Apparently, the PD-35 should be expected around the same period.
