AI to help restore historical materials for documentary about the Far East

CEO of Vifsaida studio: Neural networks can "fill in" images when colorizing film

The creators of the documentary film "Blizkiy Dalniy" (Close Far East) about the Far East may use artificial intelligence (AI) to restore historical materials. This was announced by Philipp Kudryashov, CEO of the social cinema studio "Vifsaida".

This refers to the restoration of historical chronicle materials of the region without colorization (the process of adding color to black-and-white films), Kudryashov explained.

Perhaps the photographs we will be working with can also undergo some restoration using artificial intelligence.

In his opinion, AI can be both a friend and an enemy to a filmmaker. Sometimes, during colorization, a neural network often "fills in" details, creating an implausible image, Kudryashov concluded.

Russian filmmakers are actively using AI technologies in film production. Neural networks are entrusted with routine tasks, for example, they are used to generate video effects, change actors' voices, and select the best scenes for editing.

The documentary "Blizkiy Dalniy" is being prepared for the 100th anniversary of the Far Eastern Newsreel Studio. The film is being made with the support of the "History of the Fatherland" Foundation of the Russian Historical Society.
