"Shooting sparrows with a cannon": Su-30 and Su-27 deemed ineffective against drones

Major General of Aviation Popov: even modern aircraft find it difficult to detect UAVs

The development of drones forces us to look for new ways to strengthen air defense. The author of the Telegram channel "Russkiy Inzhener" Alexey Vasiliev proposed using Su-27 and Su-30 fighters to combat drones.

In his opinion, some of the aircraft could be restored at aircraft repair plants and used to create a unique air interception system. As weaponry, the expert suggests using R-27T and R-60 infrared-guided missiles.

However, retired Major General of Aviation Vladimir Popov stated that using heavy fighters against drones might be too expensive and ineffective.

The idea of using old Su-27s and Su-30s seems expensive and ineffective to me. An aircraft really won't detect every drone – they are often small. With larger models, such a trick might still work, but overall, it's simply impractical.
Vladimir Popov, retired Major General

Popov believes that sending fighters to destroy drones is comparable to "shooting sparrows with a cannon."
