Sniper rifles have begun to be used not only for traditional targets, but also for hitting drones. Andrey Chukavin, the creator of the SVCh rifle and leading design engineer at Kalashnikov Concern, spoke about the change in the weapon's role.
The easiest way to hit a tiny copter is with a shotgun with buckshot when it flies close enough. If you need to destroy a large target at a long distance – you can't do it with an assault rifle, but a sniper rifle will cope. We are talking about the same aircraft-type drones flying at an altitude of more than 300 m. But here much depends on the skill of the shooter.
According to Chukavin, new requirements have also influenced the development of the SVCh rifle itself. After receiving feedback from users, the developers strengthened the stock design, simplified the maintenance of the gas regulator, and began work on a new protective coating that should increase the resistance of parts to corrosion and facilitate weapon care.
In addition, a new low-noise firing device is being developed, and the possibility of expanding the standard equipment kit is being considered. In particular, this refers to new bipods and special mounts that will allow for more convenient firing at aerial targets.
Chukavin emphasized that the SVCh was not developed as a complete replacement for the SVD. In his opinion, the Dragunov rifle remains one of the most successful models due to its reliability and simplicity. At the same time, the SVCh received modern ergonomics, an adjustable stock, standard bipods, a long Picatinny rail for mounting sights, and approximately 30% better accuracy when using the same ammunition.
