Bankruptcy on Sale: Alfa-Bank Puts 62 Billion Rubles of Overdue Debt Up for Sale

Collectors acquire complex cases almost for a song, but recovery requires special expertise

From January to May, Alfa-Bank put up for sale overdue debts totaling 62 billion rubles, Kommersant writes, citing participants in the collection market. This accounts for 36% of the total volume of bank overdue debt offered for sale during this period, which amounted to 170 billion rubles.

This primarily concerns debts overdue for more than a year. A significant portion of the portfolio consists of cases where the debtor has already filed for personal bankruptcy, but the court has not yet made a decision.

The bank's strategy in the cession market remains unchanged, and the planned volume of the portfolio for sale this year is not increasing and corresponds to the 2025 level.

Such debts are sold cheaply – for only 0.1–0.2% of the principal amount. Working with them is more difficult: it requires participation in bankruptcy proceedings and understanding whether the person will have assets left for recovery. Therefore, only collectors with a specialized team and a clear strategy purchase such lots.

Banks' interest in selling "bankruptcy" overdue debt is growing along with the number of personal bankruptcies. In the first quarter of 2026, Russian courts declared 137.5 thousand citizens bankrupt – 13.7% more than a year earlier. Over 2.2 million people have gone through this procedure in total.
