In May 2026, Russians took out 84.9 thousand car loans. This is 3.3% more than a year ago, when the figure was 82.2 thousand loans. However, compared to April, the market slightly declined: a month earlier, 88.8 thousand car loans were issued, which is 4.4% more. These data are provided by the National Bureau of Credit Histories.
The most car loans in May were issued in Moscow – 6.14 thousand units. This is followed by Moscow Oblast with 5.41 thousand, St. Petersburg with 4.02 thousand, the Republic of Tatarstan with 4 thousand, and Krasnodar Krai with 3.26 thousand.
Looking at the top 30 regions by car loan issuance, Udmurtia saw the sharpest decline over the month (−13.4%). Significant decreases were also observed in Samara Oblast — by 11.7%, Belgorod Oblast — by 11.3%, Bashkortostan — by 8.7%, and Vologda Oblast — also by 8.7%.
At the same time, in several large regions, issuances, on the contrary, increased. In Krasnoyarsk Krai, the indicator grew by 4.3%, in Rostov Oblast — by 0.9%, in Stavropol Krai — by 0.6%.
In Moscow and St. Petersburg, the number of car loans issued decreased by 2.5% and 2% respectively over the month.
