From January to May 2026, Kazakhstan purchased 1.4 billion kWh of electricity from Russia. This is 28% more than the volume of supplies for the same period last year, reported the export operator "Inter RAO".
As Alexandra Panina, a member of the board of "Inter RAO", noted, Russia plans to supply Kazakhstan with the same 4.3 billion kWh as in 2025. The current surge in purchases is only due to the consumption schedule at the beginning of the year.
At the same time, the head of the National Chamber of Entrepreneurs of Kazakhstan "Atameken", Zhakyp Khairushev, stated that the country has a huge need for its own production of power plants.
This statement came after Kazakhstan refused to purchase Russian turbines for the third power unit of GRES-2.
The republic also wants to refuse electricity supplies from Russia starting in 2027 due to the development of national energy capacities.
