Largest in the Country: Two Gigafactories for Batteries to Launch in Moscow

Production of lithium-ion modules and traction batteries is planned to start in 2026

In 2026, two battery gigafactories, which will be the largest in Russia, will start operating in Moscow. This was announced by the capital's mayor, Sergey Sobyanin, during the SPIEF.

This year, we are launching two battery gigafactories, the largest in our country. Both will start operating this year, providing traction batteries for vehicles.

The new sites plan to produce lithium-ion cells, modules, traction batteries, and stationary energy storage systems. Production is expected to begin in September, with compact battery production starting in December. Once at full capacity, the enterprises will be able to produce up to 33 million battery cells per year.

According to Sobyanin, such batteries are needed for electric vehicles, electric buses, electric vessels, gadgets, and other equipment. The mayor noted that a traction battery is one of the key components of an electric vehicle: it can account for 30-40% of the car's cost.

Memorandums on the development of electric transport and energy storage systems were also signed at the SPIEF. One of the projects involves the creation of Russia's first full-cycle center for testing and certifying energy storage devices and their components in the Technopolis Moscow SEZ.

Sobyanin emphasized that the current lack of such infrastructure forces manufacturers to send products abroad for testing, which increases project timelines and costs. The new center should simplify certification and accelerate the development of the industry in Russia.
