The Tank Support Fighting Vehicle (BMPT) "Terminator" has been renamed "Spiridon" at the request of servicemen and factory workers. A corresponding application was filed with the Federal Service for Intellectual Property (Rospatent). This was reported by the Uralvagonzavod (UVZ) concern (part of the Rostec state corporation).
It was named "Spiridon" – a name combining heroic and spiritual meanings.
The concern explained that the previous name was associated with a killer robot from an American film. "Spiridon," however, recalls historical truth and the defenders of the native land.
This name means "strong," "sturdy," "reliable." The factory workers are confident that the BMPT will be a true protector of combat crews, UVZ emphasized.
The BMPT "Terminator" was developed by specialists from the Ural Design Bureau of Transport Engineering (UKBTM) (Nizhny Tagil). The first prototypes of the combat vehicle were assembled at the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant on the chassis of the T-72 tank.
The modern version of the combat vehicle is made on the T-90 chassis. The BMPT was officially adopted by the Ground Forces in 2018. The number of "Terminators" in the Russian Armed Forces is not disclosed.
