5G networks in Russia may start launching in the near future, but iPhone owners will likely not be able to use them. As cellular communication experts told "Izvestia", the problem is not with the hardware: many Apple models technically support the necessary technologies. The limitation is related to the firmware and settings controlled by Apple itself.
Before activating 5G, the company usually requires operators to confirm that the standard works correctly in their networks. But after Apple's departure from Russia, interaction with domestic operators almost ceased, so going through such a procedure will be extremely difficult.
According to materials from the State Commission for Radio Frequencies, Russian operators may be allocated the 4.63–4.99 GHz band for 5G deployment in large cities. In cities with a population of over a million, fifth-generation communication should appear no later than the end of 2027, and with the use of the technological neutrality principle, the first launches are possible sooner.
However, there remains a risk for iPhones: even with a network available, the smartphone may simply not get access to 5G. A similar situation already occurred in 2021, when during the testing of fifth-generation networks, Apple did not unlock the function for Russian users.
Experts believe that in the next year or two, the absence of 5G will not be critical for iPhone owners. Full coverage will be rolled out gradually, and a noticeable speed increase will not appear immediately and everywhere. Other factors have a stronger impact on demand: device prices, parallel imports, service restrictions, and users' habit of the Apple ecosystem.
