Arctic in the Palm of Your Hand: Roscosmos Satellites Take Control of the Northern Sea Route

Space communication should enhance route safety and facilitate logistics

The Russian space constellation for monitoring the Northern Sea Route has been fully formed and has begun transmitting data in test mode. This was announced by Vladimir Panov, Special Representative of Rosatom for Arctic Projects, during a meeting of the Council of Shipping Participants for the Northern Sea Route.

According to Panov, all planned orbital infrastructure is already functioning, and information is being received in real-time. Soon, this data will be integrated into the Unified Digital Services Platform, which will allow monitoring the situation along the entire route. This solution, as the speaker noted, will significantly change logistics and navigation, especially in the eastern part of the Arctic, where weather conditions traditionally complicate shipping.

Industry representatives plan to invite Roscosmos experts to the next council meeting to thoroughly analyze the technical characteristics of the satellite system and discuss the prospects of its application for ensuring the safety of maritime transport.

Recall that the Council of Shipping Participants for the Northern Sea Route has been operating since spring 2022. Its task is to coordinate the efforts of departments and companies to improve the reliability of Arctic routes and support domestic shipbuilding. The launch of space monitoring is another step in implementing this strategy.
