Sailors and representatives of the "Lyudi Morya" foundation examined the sunken object. Based on archival data, the vessel's outlines and dimensions resemble those of the "Knyaz Gorchakov". Specialists will use unmanned television vehicles for further study.

The steamer was built in 1901 in Great Britain. Its home port was Odesa.

On May 18, 1906, the "Knyaz Gorchakov" was in the area of Askold Island (Peter the Great Gulf of the Sea of Japan). The ship hit a mine and sustained a breach in the bow of the hull. The crew abandoned the steamer, after which it sank.
