Russian automotive industry takes over Cuba: thousands of cars sent to the island

Havana has already received about 2,000 KamAZ trucks, hundreds of Lada and Gazelle cars, and now a taxi fleet with Moskvich cars is being prepared.

Cuba continues to expand its fleet of Russian cars. In recent years, the country has received about 2,000 KamAZ trucks, over 300 Lada cars, and approximately 400 Gazelle family vehicles. In the tourism sector, there is also high demand for UAZ SUVs. Against this backdrop, Russia and Cuba are preparing a new joint transport project – the launch of a taxi fleet based on Moskvich cars.

The project is currently in the stage of creating a joint venture. This was announced by the Russian Ambassador to Cuba, Viktor Koronelli. According to him, the Moscow Department of Transport maintains constant contact with Cuban partners to coordinate work on launching the taxi fleet.

As part of the project, 50 Moskvich cars are planned to be sent to Havana, including versions with gasoline engines and electric vehicles. The cars and necessary equipment are already prepared for shipment from Russia.

Russian cars have been increasingly used in Cuba in recent years in both the commercial and public sectors. In addition to supplying cargo and passenger vehicles, at the end of 2025, Moscow handed over ten Moskvich 6 cars to Cuban hospitals for the needs of the healthcare system. The cars were received by medical institutions in Havana.
