Scientists from Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU) have developed an innovative system for internal heating of electric vehicle batteries. This will extend battery life, the university's press service reported.
This refers to a complex for heating lithium-ion batteries with high-frequency alternating current in the range of 5-15 kHz and above. With its help, electric vehicles can be started at low temperatures.
Operating in harsh conditions leads to a nearly 2-fold reduction in electric vehicles' range, decreased power and dynamics, significant energy losses for heating, and up to 10 times longer charging times.
In severe frosts, a discharged battery cannot be charged without preheating. Using lithium-ion batteries at temperatures below -20°C can lead to their rapid wear.
What the development consists of
The internal heating system includes a lithium-ion battery (LIB), an electronic unit with two power terminals, and an external communication interface connector. Electric current flows through the LIB and converts electrical energy into thermal energy.
The advantage of the product is an almost 2.5-fold increase in battery charging speed compared to an unheated battery, as well as an efficiency of over 90%.
Gertel stated that similar technologies are being developed in China. In Russia, several companies have shown interest in the Novosibirsk project.
An experimental sample of the heating system is already ready. In the near future, scientists will create a prototype for an electric vehicle format.
