Trains to Kaliningrad halted due to accident in Lithuania: Passengers wait in carriages

Train movement on the section completely suspended

Train movement on the Kaliningrad direction has been suspended due to a railway accident in Lithuania. This was reported by the company "Lietuvos geležinkeliai".

The incident occurred in the Kaunas district: a locomotive and several freight cars, en route from Duisburg, derailed. They were transporting methanol, but according to the Lithuanian side, there is no threat to people and no casualties were recorded as a result of the accident.

Due to the incident, train movement has been stopped, including transit passenger trains. In total, the consequences of the accident affected 22 trains.

Passengers on local routes and trains heading to Poland are planned to be transported by buses with a transfer at the border. However, passengers on Kaliningrad trains remain in their carriages – they are prohibited from leaving the train, so they are forced to wait for the resumption of movement.

It is noted that this is the second railway accident in Lithuania in recent days. Earlier, in the Kėdainiai district, freight platforms derailed, and then about 4,000 passengers had to be transported by buses.
