The Russian Navy has 53 submarines in service, including 13 strategic ones. These figures were published by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in the new edition of the Military Balance handbook.
Five of them are Project 667BDRM, three are Project 955 "Borei", and five are Project 955A "Borei-A", according to Western analysts.
In terms of total submarine forces worldwide, according to Military Balance, the United States leads. At the beginning of this year, they had 64 submarines, 14 of which are strategic nuclear submarines (SSBNs) of the Ohio class.
China is catching up with the US in terms of submarine numbers. At the beginning of the year, China had 62 submarines, 6 of which are strategic, Project Type-094.
Earlier it became known that the Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering "Rubin" is carrying out design work on the creation of new generation submarines that will become part of the Navy.
