A key system that cools the reactor without electricity has been launched at the Akkuyu NPP

Specialists have installed one of the main nuclear safety barriers of the plant

The installation of the passive heat removal system (PHRS) in the reactor building of the first power unit of the Akkuyu NPP in Turkey has been completed. The work was carried out by Akkuyu Nuclear specialists, who installed key elements of the system, including a deflector, heat exchangers, electromagnetic devices, as well as associated building structures and air ducts.

The PHRS system is one of the safety engineering solutions for power units with VVER-1200 reactors and is designed to remove heat without external power supply and without personnel intervention. Its operation is based on natural physical processes that provide passive cooling of the reactor plant.

In total, about 90 units of equipment and structural elements were installed during the installation.

Recall that earlier, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar announced that the launch of the Akkuyu NPP is planned for October 2026. At the same time, he noted that this date is an optimistic scenario, since after the completion of construction, hundreds of tests and equipment checks will have to be carried out. According to him, the technical readiness of the first power unit is estimated at 99%.
