Rostekhnadzor specialists conducted a scheduled inspection of the fresh nuclear fuel storage system at the Zaporizhzhia NPP. According to the station's press service, no deficiencies affecting safety were identified during the inspection. The inspection confirmed the integrity and correctness of nuclear material accounting, and excluded the risk of unauthorized actions.
Under the supervision of IAEA experts, the fresh fuel units UST-1 and UST-2 were examined. Such procedures are carried out to guarantee the readiness of fuel assemblies for loading into the reactor core. The station emphasized that all systems and processes related to fuel storage comply with established requirements, and the radiation situation at the site remains within normal limits.
Zaporizhzhia NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe with six VVER-1000 power units. All reactors have been in cold shutdown mode since September 2022, and no electricity is being generated. In December 2025, Rostekhnadzor issued a license for the operation of the first power unit, and in February 2026, for the second. Major repairs of the power units are planned for the current year, which will require confirmed integrity of the fuel reserve.
Regular monitoring of the condition of fresh assemblies is one of the key elements of ensuring safety during the preparation for a possible restart of capacities.
