VPN payments could be cut off at any moment: the countdown is in days

Restrictions may be introduced as quickly as in the Apple ID case

Russians may face sudden restrictions when paying for VPN services — this could happen literally within a few days. This was stated by TelecomDaily CEO Denis Kuskov.

According to him, such a scenario is quite realistic: if a service is not represented in Russia, it may encounter problems accepting payments from Russian users. In that case, access to payment could be restricted almost instantly — as had previously happened with Apple ID top-ups through mobile operators.

This is quite realistic. If a company is not represented in Russia, then it is quite possible that it will not be able to accept payments. This could happen very quickly. Some people use a free VPN, some use a paid one. Therefore, those who pay for it simply need to anticipate the possible risks. By analogy with the ban on paying for Apple ID from two Russian mobile operators, this happened fairly quickly, practically within a week. Therefore, this could happen within a few days, or it could take weeks and months

Against the backdrop of these risks, some VPN services are already warning customers about possible restrictions and offering to purchase long-term subscriptions. However, such actions may be connected not only with concern for users, but also with a desire to accelerate sales amid uncertainty.

At the same time, the exact timing of possible restrictions remains unknown — they may appear in the coming days or stretch over weeks or months.

Earlier, "Pervyi tekhnicheskii" wrote that against the backdrop of such risks, experts advise not to pay for VPN services in advance so as not to lose money in the event of sudden blocks.
