Closer to the equator means higher into space: Russia is considering Malaysia for rocket launches

The country's location makes it possible to place more payload into orbit and makes it a promising site for space projects

Moscow and Kuala Lumpur have a mutual interest in cooperation in the space sector. Malaysia is being considered as a convenient site for rocket launches. Russian Ambassador to Malaysia Nail Latypov told TASS about this on the sidelines of the Defence Services Asia (DSA) exhibition in Kuala Lumpur.

According to the diplomat, Malaysia is attractive to Roscosmos primarily because of its location. The country is closer to the equator, and this provides a key advantage: during launches, it is possible to place more payload into orbit.

The countries are already engaged in a substantive dialogue on developing cooperation. Moreover, the interest is mutual. Malaysia, for its part, is interested in jointly building satellites with Russia and in using Russian launch vehicles to send them into space.

As the ambassador noted, such contacts have already gone beyond the discussion stage. Previously, the Malaysian side came forward with specific proposals, and some projects involving the launch of small spacecraft had already been carried out.

The topic is being discussed against the backdrop of the Defence Services Asia 2026 International Exhibition of Arms and Military Equipment, which opened on April 20 in Kuala Lumpur and will run until April 23. The Russian exhibit there is organized by Rosoboronexport.
