Russian Su-30MKA in Algeria took Pope under their wing

Containers with SAP-518 Regata active jamming stations were visible on the wingtips of the fighters

Multipurpose Su-30MKA fighters of the Algerian Air Force performed an honorary escort of the plane of Pope Leo XIV, who completed a historic visit to Algeria on April 15. Containers with SAP-518 Regata active jamming stations were visible on the wingtips of the Russian aircraft.

Algeria is one of the largest operators of Russian combat aircraft in Africa. In 2015, Russia and Algeria signed a contract for the supply of an additional batch of Su-30MKA fighters. The first aircraft of this type entered service with the Algerian Air Force back in 2007 — then 28 aircraft were purchased. In 2015, the contract was expanded, and the total number of fighters delivered exceeded 60 units.

Su-30MKA is an export version of the Russian heavy fighter of the 4+ generation. The aircraft is equipped with two AL-31FP turbojet engines with controlled thrust vector, which provides it with super-maneuverability. The aircraft is capable of speeds up to 2125 km/h (about 2 M) and can fly up to 3000 km without refueling. The combat radius of action is up to 1500 km. Armament is located on 12 suspension points: guided air-to-air missiles (including R-77 and R-73) and air-to-surface missiles, guided bombs, as well as a built-in 30-mm GSH-301 cannon. The crew consists of two people (pilot and navigator-operator).
