Unexpected tandem: Russian MiG-29 and American F-4 Phantom II worked in tandem over Tehran

The fighters escorted the plane of the Chief of the General Staff of Pakistan

Iranian MiG-29 and F-4 Phantom II fighters were spotted over Tehran. They escorted the plane of the Chief of the General Staff of Pakistan, Field Marshal Asim Munir, who arrived on a visit to the Iranian capital. The last time these vehicles appeared together in the sky over Tehran was in early March, and after the cessation of hostilities, they were returned to service.

According to various estimates, the Iranian Air Force may have up to forty MiG-29s, all of which belong to early modifications. About twenty-five of them are former Iraqi ones that flew to Iran in early 1991, when the international coalition forces led by the United States began Operation Desert Storm. Later, Tehran bought several more vehicles.

The Iranian defense industry has managed to repair fighters of this type, but their combat capabilities have remained at the level of the 1980s. This does not allow them to equally resist such modern models as the American F-35 Lightning II.
