Telecom Operators Include Warnings: MTS, MegaFon, and Beeline Ask to Disable VPN

Russians Warned About Malfunctions When Using Circumvention Services

Russian telecom operators have begun to massively inform subscribers about the undesirability of using VPNs. The MTS application displays a banner "VPN is enabled. Data may not be displayed" when launched, MegaFon displays "Disable VPN so that everything works well in the application", and Beeline also recommends abandoning circumvention tools for stable operation.

The identification of VPN traffic is based on indirect signs: IP addresses characteristic of data centers, sharp jumps in geolocation between sessions, and anomalies in user behavior are analyzed. There is no 100% detection accuracy, especially on iOS, where data collection from third-party applications is limited.

Nevertheless, since April 15, major online platforms, on the recommendation of the regulator, have begun to block access to their resources. In particular, the restrictions affected the applications of Yandex, VK, Sberbank, T-Bank, Ozon and Yandex Pay.
