Locomotives Break Down Less Often: Vibration Diagnostics Helped LocoTech Reduce the Number of Bearing Failures

Over the year, specialists checked more than 2.1 million units and found defects in 1,300 of them

In 2025, the number of failures of bearing units in locomotives serviced by LocoTech-Service decreased by 21% compared to the previous year, Perviy Technicheskiy was told in the company's press service. The result was achieved thanks to vibration diagnostics - it helped to adjust the maintenance of units, including lubrication.

Specialists checked over 2.1 million bearing units and confirmed defects in more than 1,300 of them, preventing possible equipment failures en route.

Diagnostics are carried out during scheduled maintenance and repairs. In 49 depots, this is done by full-time employees, in 37 - by experts from the Research Institute of Technology, Control and Diagnostics (NIITKD). The qualification requirements for everyone are the same, and the equipment allows to identify the same defects in the same intervals.

Cooperation with LocoTech-Service helped NIITKD to refine the equipment. The Prognoz-PRO vibration diagnostics complex and an on-board diagnostics system were created, the first version of which has already been tested. In 2026, 10 complexes will be delivered to the depot - this will increase the speed and accuracy of detection of defective parts.
