Biometrics Now Accepted on Russian Trains - How It Works

The new method of identity verification is already being tested on three routes

Now you can board a train without document checks — simply confirm your identity using biometrics. The new service has already launched in Russia, although currently in pilot mode and on select routes. The launch was announced by the Ministry of Digital Development.

You can initially use biometric boarding at stations on three routes:

  • Moscow (Yaroslavsky Station) — Kostroma;
  • Moscow (Kursky and Vostochny Stations) — Ivanovo;
  • Moscow (Vostochny Station) — Nizhny Novgorod.

Biometrics does not replace the usual document check, but acts as an alternative. The passenger decides how to confirm their identity.

During the pilot phase, the Ministry of Digital Development recommends that you still bring the document used to purchase the ticket.

To use the new method of boarding a train, you need to register your biometrics in the Unified Biometric System in advance — this can be done at a bank or through on-site registration. Then you need to consent to the processing of data on the website. When boarding, you must inform the conductor that identity verification will be done using biometrics.

The department explained that this format speeds up boarding, helps reduce queues, and allows railway companies to organize their work more efficiently, while complying with personal data protection requirements.
