Happy Birthday, RuNet! .RU domain turns 32.

On April 7, 2026, the Russian national domain .RU turns 32 years old. On this day in 1994, the domain record was entered into the IANA database. The date is considered the birthday not only of the domain, but also of the RuNet.

Today, the .RU domain ranks fifth among national domains in terms of the number of registered names and ninth among all top-level domains. A total of 6,119,675 domain names have been registered. Of these, 96.4% are delegated, which indicates a high level of actual use.

There are 4,788,101 domains with active services in the .RU domain zone, which is 78.2% of the total number. Of these, 30.2% are used for full-fledged websites, 30.3% for web applications and single-page solutions, and 18.5% only for mail. Another 3.6% are used for redirects, and 17.5% are parked.

Statistics of the .RU domain: registration and use

Over the past 12 months, 1,840,939 new domain names have been registered in the .RU zone. On average, more than 153 thousand new registrations appear every month. These indicators confirm the stable interest in the domain zone from businesses and private users.

77.9% of domain names are registered by individuals. Companies and organizations own 22.1% of domains. The total number of administrators is 2,096,684. At the same time, 75.8% of administrators manage one domain, and 1.9% manage more than ten.

The largest number of domains are registered in Moscow and the Moscow region — 36.7% or 2,243,850 names. The highest growth for the year was recorded in the Voronezh region — 9195 domains (11.2%), the Tomsk region — 7863 domains (31.6%) and the Sverdlovsk region — 6300 domains (4.4%).

It should be noted that according to a report by the Cloudwards portal for 2026, Russia ranked second to last in the world in terms of internet freedom, scoring 4 points out of 100. The country was in the same group as China, Iran and Pakistan.
