Rosatom Ready to Extend the Service Life of the Armenian NPP Until 2036

The current service life of the power unit expires in the fall of 2026

Rosatom has confirmed the technical feasibility of extending the operational life of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant until 2036. The current service life of the power unit expires in the fall of 2026, while the preparation of documentation for an interim extension until the fall of 2031 is being completed.

Experts from the state corporation note that a number of technical conditions must be met for further extension until 2036. The key requirement concerns the distribution of contract work: to provide guarantees of safe operation, Rosatom's share in contract work must be at least seventy percent.

Special attention is paid to the seismic safety of the facility. The Armenian NPP is located in a seismically active region, which places increased demands on the qualifications of contractors and the quality of work performed. Experience in operating similar facilities shows that violation of technological discipline or involvement of contractors without relevant experience can affect the reliability of the power unit.

Currently, planned work is continuing at the station to assess the technical condition of equipment and control systems. The results of these studies will form the basis of the final decision on the parameters for extending the operational life.

Armenian NPP (Metsamor NPP) is a nuclear power plant in Armenia, built between 1969 and 1977 near the city of Metsamor, 26 km from the outskirts of Yerevan.
