The crews of Mi-8 multi-purpose helicopters of the Baltic Fleet's naval aviation destroyed columns of military equipment and fortifications of a mock enemy during exercises at a training ground in the Kaliningrad region. This was reported by the press service of the Baltic Fleet.
During the exercise, more than 10 crews practiced the use of aviation weapons against ground targets at a range of 500 m to 2 km from minimum and medium altitudes.
The helicopter pilots used S-8 unguided missiles to deliver strikes, and also used UPK-23/250 with a built-in twin-barreled GSh-23 cannon with a caliber of 23 mm. The press service of the fleet explained that the S-8s are designed to destroy single and group targets at a distance of up to 6 km, as well as lightly armored vehicles and ships.
About the S-8 missile
The aviation ammunition was developed at OKB-16 and the Institute of Applied Physics (Novosibirsk). Initially, the S-8 had a shaped-charge fragmentation warhead. Many modifications have been created on the basis of the missile, including concrete-piercing, volume-detonating, tandem cumulative, illuminating, and high-explosive fragmentation versions.
