MLRS "Grad" and "Smerch" will become more powerful: NPO "Splav" has modernized the high-explosive fragmentation warhead

The development increases efficiency with optimal explosive weight

Specialists from the Tula-based NPO Splav (part of the Rostec State Corporation) have patented a high-explosive fragmentation warhead for rockets, mainly for multiple launch rocket systems. According to patent documentation, the new development improves the reliability of the design, the effectiveness of fragmentation and high-explosive action, as well as the manufacturability.

The design of the warhead includes a body consisting of front and rear shells, between which a container with an explosive charge is fixed. On the inner surface of the container, striking elements of rhombic shape are formed, providing effective fragmentation action. The head and bottom cups contain explosive devices with transfer charges. A striker is rigidly fixed on the front shell of the body, and an adapter with an initiating device and a gas duct is fixed in the rear.

A special feature of the development is the carefully selected mass of the explosive charge, which ranges from 0.48 to 0.51 of the total mass of the warhead. This ratio optimizes the balance between high-explosive and fragmentation effects, ensuring maximum target engagement efficiency.

NPO Splav is a leading Russian developer and manufacturer of multiple launch rocket systems, including the famous Grad, Smerch, and Tornado-S. The new development is likely to be used in advanced ammunition for these systems.
