Modernized Grad MLRS Protected with Anti-Drone "Birdhouse" for the First Time

The Soviet-era complex is now equipped with an electronic warfare station and a "barbecue" on the cabin

Russian BM-21 Grad multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) have for the first time begun to be protected by an anti-drone metal structure over the entire body in the upper projection. Footage of the modernized combat vehicles was shown by the press service of the Ministry of Defense.

They show a vehicle with a set of anti-drone protection on the guides, as well as on the cabin, which has not been seen before. The Grad received a powerful electronic warfare (EW) system, three modules of which were placed on the roof.

The commander of the combat vehicle with the call sign Potap spoke about the specifics of performing combat missions.

The sky is swarming with drones, so we work as quickly and efficiently as possible. We go out under the cover of air surveillance posts. We use domestic means of communication – it is uninterrupted, we hear each other perfectly, everything works properly.
Call sign Potap, commander of BM-21 Grad

As a reminder, the Grad carries 40 guides at once for 122 mm caliber rockets. The firing range with a high-explosive fragmentation projectile is 40 km. The MLRS combat vehicle was built on the chassis of a Ural-4320 truck.

Another advantage of the new modification of the Grad is the reduced longitudinal channels of the guides above the surface in the horizontal position, which ensures the facilitation and acceleration of the process of reloading ammunition.
