Nuclear Power Plant on the Moon: Rosatom Plans Launch by 2035

Likhachev: NPP with a capacity of 5 kW will last up to 10 years

Rosatom is preparing to implement an ambitious project to deliver a nuclear power plant to the Moon. The Director General of the Rosatom State Corporation, Alexei Likhachev, announced that the equipment will begin to be transported to the Earth's satellite in the 2030s, and the target date for the completion of the mission is the middle of the decade.

In the 2030s, we should begin moving products [for the nuclear power plant] to the Moon. This is a station with a capacity of at least 5 kW with operation up to 10 years.

These parameters allow providing energy to scientific instruments, life support systems, and communications of the future lunar base.

If the schedule is adhered to, by 2035, an autonomous energy source will appear on the Moon, capable of supporting international research missions and laying the foundation for the next stage of space exploration.

Earlier, expert Zheleznyakov explained when people will be able to extract resources on the Moon and why the industrial development of the Earth's natural satellite is being postponed for decades.
