Russia to Replace Eight Communication Satellites by 2030

The orbital constellation will receive more transponders without expanding the number of spacecraft

By the end of the decade, the company "Kosmicheskaya Svyaz" plans to launch eight new satellites into geostationary orbit. They will replace the equipment that has exhausted its resources and increase the total channel capacity: the number of transponders will increase from 269 to 286. This was reported in the press service of the enterprise, referring to the words of General Director Alexei Volin.

The number of devices in geostationary orbit will remain the same, as it is tied to the orbital positions assigned to Russia. These positions are already occupied by existing networks, and their number is stable. Therefore, the company's strategy is based not on quantitative expansion, but on qualitative renewal: new satellites will bring more bandwidth to the same points of presence.

Among the replaced devices was the "Express-AT1", which stopped communicating on March 4 for an unknown reason. The satellite did not work until the end of its active life for about three years.

For end users, the update means a more stable signal, expanded coverage and the ability to connect new services. Increasing the number of transponders will allow operators to more effectively distribute traffic and launch projects that require high bandwidth, including broadcasts in ultra-high resolution and Internet access in remote regions.
