"Varshavyanka" submarine sank in Iran after a strike on a base in Bandar Abbas

The Project 877EKM submarine has been in service with the Islamic Republic since the 90s

The Iranian diesel-electric submarine (DES) «Varshavyanka» of Project 877EKM of Russian production did sink after the strike on the naval base of Bandar Abbas. This was reported by the American specialized portal The War Zone, citing satellite images.

Analysts studied satellite images of Iranian facilities and concluded that the submarine was flooded, although they initially claimed otherwise.

The only Kilo-class submarine, the most modern of the Iranian ones, which was anchored at the base, also appears to have sunk. A large trace of fire is visible near its mooring place at the pier.

As a reminder, «Varshavyanka» is the export designation of diesel-electric submarines of Projects 877 and 636, developed in the USSR and modernized in Russia. In NATO, they were designated Kilo.

Iran received such submarines in the 1990s. They are officially classified as the «Halibut» family (877) and its further development — 636. The name «Varshavyanka» has become established as an unofficial common name for export versions.
