Internet in phone booths: An unexpected idea proposed in Russia

Street communication points can help people during mobile network outages

Street phone booths may reappear in Russia, but in a completely new format. The State Duma has proposed installing payphones with Internet access in cities so that people can stay connected during mobile communication outages.

This initiative was put forward by Igor Antropenko, a member of the State Duma Committee on Industry and Trade. According to him, modern payphones can become an important element of urban security infrastructure.

The topic of reviving payphones, but with Internet access, is becoming increasingly urgent. This will allow citizens to stay connected even during outages and ensure an adequate level of security.

The idea came about against the background of interruptions in the operation of the mobile Internet in the center of Moscow, which have been observed in recent days. The authorities explain the restrictions by security measures.

As presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov stated earlier, such measures may continue for as long as it takes to ensure security.

According to Antropenko, residents of border regions have already become accustomed to such communication restrictions, but in large administrative centers such situations cause more discomfort.

If the initiative is supported, urban payphones may get a new lease of life, turning from a relic of the past into emergency communication points with Internet access.
