Kazakhstan has revised the construction scheme for the third power unit at Ekibastuz GRES-2 and abandoned Russian turbines and generators. Harbin Electric International has become the new equipment supplier.
The decision made it possible to reduce the cost of the project by more than 250 billion tenge, said Vice Minister of Energy of the Republic Sungat Yesimkhanov. According to him, the cost of the power unit will now be less than 400 billion tenge instead of 650 billion.
The contract for the manufacture and supply of the turbine and turbogenerator was signed in September 2025. In parallel, the authorities relaunched the frozen expansion project of the station.
Previously, construction was planned with the participation of Russian enterprises and relied on a concessional loan, but funding did not arrive, and delivery times were delayed.
The Chinese side offered to use previously manufactured units and build a block of increased capacity, but in the end, the project was reformatted to new parameters. The fate of the equipment already manufactured for tens of billions of tenge is still being determined.
