Russian FAB-500T aerial bombs with universal planning and correction modules (UMPK) of increased range have been seriously modernized. The system has undergone significant changes affecting the range and accuracy of use.
The Telegram channel "Russkoe oruzhie" reported that the bombs have begun to be equipped with radar altimeters on a permanent basis.
The presence of such equipment indicates an expansion of combat capabilities — UMPK can support detonation of the warhead not only upon contact with the surface, but also in the air — at a specified altitude.
Airburst is usually considered a way to significantly increase the effectiveness of impact against ground targets. Due to detonation above the surface, the area of effect increases and the damaging effect is distributed more evenly.
Recall that the main carriers of aerial bombs with UMPK at present are the Su-34 and Su-35S fighters.
