Virtual reality will be prescribed in GOSTs for safety

VR and AR will for the first time receive uniform rules for protecting users and ensuring compatibility of 3D drawings

Rosstandart has submitted the first GOSTs for augmented and virtual reality technologies for public discussion. The documents establish requirements for the compatibility, application, and safety of AR/VR systems, Izvestia was told by the ANO NTI Platform.

Standards are needed, for example, so that a 3D drawing created in one design bureau can be opened at a factory using a different platform. In addition, the use of VR glasses should not lead to user injuries.

Three documents are under discussion: one describes the architecture of systems, the second describes the use of VR and AR in education, and the third is dedicated to safety.

The introduction of VR and AR without uniform configuration rules, safety zones, and usage regulations can lead to user injuries, falls, poor health, and errors associated with attention overload.

Experts are divided in their opinions. Supporters of GOSTs point to the risks of injury and the impossibility of certifying equipment without uniform requirements. Opponents believe that technologies are developing too quickly to fit them into a rigid framework.

Attempts to standardize everything and everyone are a bad idea. AR/VR technologies are developing too quickly to be incorporated into standards, except through general framework requirements.
