Driving old Soviet cars has been banned in Uzbekistan

From February 1, the country has enforced a ban on all cars older than 1976: Moskvichs, Volgas, trucks

In Uzbekistan, a ban on the operation and re-registration of automobiles produced more than 50 years ago has come into force. The restriction applies to vehicles manufactured before 1976, Motor.ru previously reported. Preliminary estimates suggest that the law will affect about 88 thousand vehicles out of the country\'s total fleet of 5.2 million automobiles.

At the same time, the republic\'s authorities are introducing a special status for historically valuable cars. Vehicles recognized as \"antique\" will receive distinctive ANT-series license plates. To obtain this status, the vehicle must be in satisfactory external condition and retain key components corresponding to its year of manufacture and model.

Thus, owners of old automobiles will either be able to take them out of service or, if they meet strict criteria, register them as antiques for limited use.
