A unique GAZ-21 Volga model equipped with an automatic transmission has gone on sale in Yekaterinburg. Only about 700 such cars were manufactured in the USSR. The rare automobile is priced at 6,990,000 rubles.
The automatic transmission was developed in the Soviet Union based on an American Ford design. It was paired with a 2.4-liter engine. The car could start moving in second gear. First gear was engaged manually to increase towing capability, while third gear was intended for high-speed travel.
Problems with servicing such transmissions, as well as a shortage of suitable lubricants, prevented the widespread use of the Volga with an automatic transmission. It did not gain broad popularity. In total, only about 700 examples of this modification were produced.
The sedan offered for sale was produced in 1957. It has been fully restored. According to the seller, only original parts were used during the restoration process. The car comes with a "full set of factory tools strictly according to the 1950s specification."
