"Zorkiy" versus Starlink: why Russia needs its own satellites without internet

Information about the purpose of the spacecraft in the media turned out to be incorrect

The new Russian satellites of the "Zorkiy" series do not provide broadband internet access, and conceptually they are not an analogue of the American Starlink system, despite what a large number of publications and media outlets have claimed. This was pointed out by the Telegram channel "Russkoe oruzhie".

The authors explained that the "Zorkiy" satellites are ultra-compact Earth remote sensing satellites carrying a professional telescope camera with high-precision resolution.

In other words, they are engaged in imaging the planet's surface for various purposes, rather than providing broadband satellite internet access services like Starlink.

Roscosmos provided an exact quote from the head of the state corporation, Dmitry Bakanov, who explained the purpose of the "Zorkiy" satellites. But as it turned out, far from everyone looks at the original source.

The "Zorkiy" satellite is a spacecraft that takes images from space, and based on these images, digital maps are created that unmanned vehicles then use for navigation.

The Russian analogue of Starlink is the "Rassvet" project to create a low-orbit broadband internet satellite system by the company "Biuro 1440". Presumably, the project may be launched as early as 2030, and its cost has been estimated at 445 billion rubles.
