"We are lagging behind global leaders in this industry": an organ donor pig may be created in Russia by 2030

The project will solve the problem of donor organ shortage

By 2030, a genetically modified pig may appear in Russia. The animal's organs will be used for human transplantation. This was announced by Eduard Chuiko, General Director of "M-Genomics" company.

This will be the first project of its kind in the country and will help solve the critical problem of donor organ shortage.

It is possible to create such an animal in three to four years. We are lagging behind global leaders in this industry, but with the necessary funding, we will be able to achieve results and find the optimal solution during this period.
Eduard Chuiko, General Director of "M-Genomics" company

Genetically modified pigs are planned to be raised in sterile conditions with constant veterinary and medical control to ensure the high quality of organs and their future transplantation. In the first year, the project will be able to provide about 200 kidneys for surgical operations, which are planned to be included in the mandatory medical insurance (MHI) program. In the future, the development will be adapted for the heart, pancreas, and liver.

The project is being implemented by Meshalkin Clinic (one of the largest multidisciplinary medical centers of the Ministry of Health of Russia) in collaboration with the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In February 2025, specialists from the institute grew a piglet using IVF for the first time in Russia.

The full cycle until obtaining a registration certificate and the start of mass cultivation of genetically modified pigs will take about 12 years, of which approximately eight will be required for preclinical and clinical trials.

Earlier www1.ru reported that new types of 3D organ microsystems may appear in Russia.
