Russia and India agree on joint rocket engine program

Bakanov announces large-scale cooperation between Russia and India in the space sector

Russia and India have reached agreements on a joint program in the field of rocket engines, said Dmitry Bakanov, head of Roscosmos. He did not disclose the details of the project, noting that an official announcement is expected in the coming days.

Earlier, Russia discussed with India and China the supply of RD-171 engines and the transfer of technologies for creating advanced rocket engines. In July 2024, following negotiations between President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it was reported about the intention to study the issue of joint development and production of engines.

The General Director of Roscosmos emphasized that we are talking about mutually beneficial cooperation in the fields of engine construction, manned cosmonautics, the creation of national orbital stations, personnel training and the production of rocket fuel. He added that legally significant steps will be taken in the coming days.

Bakanov also announced negotiations on cooperation between the national orbital stations of Russia and India, which will replace the ISS. The deployment of the Russian station is planned with the launch of the scientific and energy module in December 2027 from the Vostochny cosmodrome on the Angara-A5M carrier rocket.
